Dersin Amacı

The course will help you better understand why the Kurds were involved in many violent regional conflicts and why they feel alienation in the Middle East. The course intends to find the best means to incorporate them in the peace and development of the countries they live in.

Dersin İçeriği

The course will begin by a short survey of Kurdish history before 1914. The changes to the Kurds´status during world War 1 will be examined .During the inter-war period 1918-1940 Kurdish factor was an important variable in Mosul conflict, and many regional and bi-lateral treaties which were signed between Iran, Iraq, and Turkey such as Saad Abad.

In the cold war era , the Kurds were seen as destabilizing factor in the Middle East. The cases of Mahabad Republic 1945, Baghdad Pact 1955, Algiers treaty between Iran and Iraq 1975, and Iraq –Iran war 1980-1988 will be utilized to demonstrate this. We will close by examining their potential role for peace and war in processes in the region, particularly in regional water conflicts and democratization process in the countries with Kurdish minorities
